PROGRAMS FOR ELITE ATHLETES – THE STRENGTH TO ENDURE ADVERSITY

Research conducted to isolate transitional problems amongst retiring professional athletes reveal that many of them would strongly benefit from an aggressive transitional preparation program that addresses the challenges associated with stress in this unique environment and to empower athletes with the tools for a successful transition. A successful program should be proactive in its application to increase the likelihood that the retired athlete achieves the highest possible quality of life after sports. Researchers collected data on the most common problems players experience during retirement. Studies on retiring players from the National Football League (NFL) show that 48% reported that difficulty with pain was either quite common or very common. 29% reported a loss of fitness and lack of exercise 28% reported significant weight gain, and 28% experienced sleep problems. 27% experienced difficulty with aging, and 27% experienced problems with transitioning to life after professional football. Because of these factors and others, the transition from being a professional athlete to retirement can be challenging. Concussions received in contact sports may lead to traumatic brain injuries and other long term problems associated with trauma. Additionally, players at the professional level tend to live a life organized around their performance, and are given great support to sustain their elite status. Upon retirement, athletes described the transition as a shock with a feeling of loss contributing to intense emotional and financial insecurity. This is a special program specifically created for elite level athletes. For more information please contact an APG representative.

Even the most detailed of performance plans completely depend on one’s ability to overcome obstacles and thrive in an atmosphere of constantly changing adverse variables that stand between them and their desired performance outcome. This is especially true for collective performances. When engaging in a demanding performance situation, it is essential to possess the ability to overcome obstacles in order to attain superior outcomes. For the purposes of this program, hardiness is defined as the capacity for enduring or sustaining performance levels during times of adversity, hardship, or under unfavorable conditions without deviation from an established level of performance. A person’s ability to be hardy depends largely on how well they have anticipated and then prepared for adversity in advance. Many people rely on reflection of past experiences and lessons learned in order to prepare them to be more agile in the face of adversity. No matter how hard a person prepares, when they are pushing their performances to the limits of their potential they will inevitably face demands on their mind and body that take them beyond their ability to be hardy. Demands at this level cause the person to deviate from pre-established performance levels. In fact, any tough and demanding training pushes an individual to this point frequently in the interest of continuous growth. Resiliency is defined as the power or ability to return to an original or pre-established state, performance level, or position after deviating as a result of confronting elements of adversity, hardship or unfavorable conditions that placed demands on the mind, body, or process. There are different levels of resiliency that are very important to a person’s overall success. The ability to recover mentally, physically, and emotionally following a demanding performance is essential to growth. The ability to quickly “bounce back” after a setback in the course of a performance situation is essential for sustainability at a high functioning level during execution of a task. The objectives of this overall performance enhancement program is to empower managers and associates, coaches and athletes, individuals and teams, with tools they need to continually raise their performance capabilities, and sustain those performances to the point that their individual potential allows. Each APG perfromance improvement program is structured from a combination of the above services as a minimum in order to meet the unique performance requirements as defined by the organization or individual for whom APG is providing the service.
